Ferny Grove: the line, the park & ride, and Samford

Live status · SEQ's biggest new park-and-ride · the valley day trip

Ferny Grove is the leafy end of the north-western line, and it's quietly become one of the most useful stations on the network: a massive new park-and-ride, a growing town centre, and the start of the rail trail into Samford Valley. Here's the live line status, the parking story, and why the end of this line is worth a whole day.

The park-and-ride: drive the last bit, train the rest

Ferny Grove now has one of the biggest commuter car parks in South East Queensland — a new multi-storey opened with around 905 spaces and is growing past 1,400, and it's freefor Queensland Rail customers. For anyone out in the north-west or the Samford and Dayboro hills, the play is simple: drive the last leg to Ferny Grove, park for nothing, and let the train take the traffic and the parking headache out of your city commute. There's a new town-centre development rising alongside it too, so the station's becoming a destination, not just a gateway.

The valley starts at the platform: Samford by train

Here's the local secret: the Samford Valley Rail Trail — a sealed 8.3km shared path for walking and cycling — begins right at Ferny Grove station and heads out toward Samford Village. Train to the end of the line, and you can walk or ride straight into the valley without a car in sight.

Samford Village itself rewards the trip: heritage buildings and a century-old pub, the Samford Valley Markets on the second Saturday of each month at St Paul's, character cafes (the Harry-Potter-themed Owlery in an old church is the standout), John Scott Park for the kids, and the Lyell Deer Sanctuary just out of town where you can hand-feed rescued deer. Buses run up to the village from the station if the trail isn't your thing.
