What is the Great Barrier Reef?
The Great Barrier Reef runs roughly 2,300km up the Queensland coast, from around the Bundaberg region in the south to the tip of Cape York. Brisbane is not on it. The closest access points are the southern cays reached from Bundaberg and the Town of 1770, roughly a five hour drive or train ride north.
The postcard version, Cairns, Port Douglas and the Whitsundays, sits 1,400 to 1,700km from Brisbane. That is a flight, not a drive, and certainly not a day trip. The useful thing to know is that the southern reef is genuinely closer and far less visited than most people assume.

Best for
Reaching the reef without flying
This is the answer almost nobody gives, and it is the reason this page exists. The southern reef is reachable by train from Brisbane. It is an overnight trip rather than a day trip, and fares and timetables come from Queensland Rail Travel rather than the 50c network.

Making a road trip of the southern reef towns
Bundaberg and the Town of 1770 are a comfortable long drive. Cairns is not: at roughly 1,700km it is a two day drive each way and almost always worse value than flying.
When to go
The southern reef is at its best from roughly August to October, with whales moving through and manta rays around Lady Elliot. Summer is stinger season and the wet, though it is also turtle hatching time.

Getting to the Great Barrier Reef: quick answers
Can you visit the Great Barrier Reef from Brisbane in a day?+
Realistically no. The closest reef access is around Bundaberg and the Town of 1770, roughly five hours north by road or rail, and the boat out to the coral cays is itself a full day. Expect to stay at least one night. Flying to Cairns or the Whitsundays is faster but still not a day trip from Brisbane.
