The best and worst Brisbane suburbs for public transport
An original dataset from GoThere Brisbane, the free live journey planner for South East Queensland.
In Brisbane, good public transport is a postcode lottery. We measured every suburb to show exactly how uneven it is.
Jump to your suburb in the full table ↓
Every gazetted suburb within 20km of Brisbane Central (205 of them), measured two ways: the commute into the CBD (door-to-door, arriving by 9:00am, versus driving in traffic) and connectivity (routes and frequency within a 10-minute walk). Measured from each suburb's population-weighted centre, which is published below.
With credit and thanks to the r/brisbane community, whose feedback helped present this dataset in a way that is meaningful and accurate for the people of Brisbane.

The map: fast core, slow fringe
Every suburb shaded by its door-to-door commute to the CBD. The green core is the inner city; commutes lengthen toward the fringe, and grey is no practical service. Hover a suburb for its time.
Key findings
- Fastest in: Bowen Hills (9 min), Fortitude Valley (14 min), Milton (14 min), Newmarket (15 min), South Brisbane (15 min). Slowest that still works: Larapinta (123 min), Wights Mountain (113 min), Anstead (107 min).
- Public transport is more competitive than it feels. Counting peak traffic and parking, transit is within 10 minutes of driving in 152 of 199 suburbs, and beats the car outright in 72: Chelmer, Northgate, Zillmere, Taringa, Corinda, Strathpine, Graceville, Sherwood and more.
- The number is door-to-door, and it shows its working. The median commute is 46 minutes, of which about 11 is walking to and from stops. Every figure breaks down as walk + wait + ride, so the ride matches the trip you know.
- Connectivity is a different story to speed. The typical suburb reaches 6 routes with 58 departures an hour at peak. Only 31% have a train within a 10-minute walk, 58% have buses only, and just 5 (Brisbane City, Spring Hill, Milton, South Brisbane, Newstead) reach train, bus and ferry.
The fastest commuter suburbs
The quickest door-to-door trip into the CBD. A green tag means transit is within 10 minutes of driving in traffic. This is the full table below sorted by commute time, with one exclusion: Brisbane City and Spring Hill are left out because the quickest way in from there is to walk, which is a real door-to-door time but not a public-transport one. Every other suburb is in.

The best-connected suburbs
A fast commute is one thing; how much service is on your doorstep is another. Most routes within an 800m walk, with peak departures an hour. This is the table below sorted by routes, unfiltered, so the city centre and the suburbs you can walk into it from take the top places. The first beyond that fringe is Newstead.

Brisbane's transport deserts
6 suburbs have no practical public-transport commute to the city at all. They are semi-rural and industrial pockets with little or no service: Camp Mountain, Draper, Jollys Lookout, Mount Coot-tha, Port Of Brisbane, Upper Brookfield.
Commute time vs distance
Every suburb by how far it is and how long the door-to-door trip takes. Train suburbs (orange) sit lower than bus suburbs (blue) at the same distance: the rail premium, visualised.
Rent vs commute: the value map
A quick commute doesn't reliably cost more. Nundah is a 22-minute commute for $670/wk, while New Farm charges $1200 for 19 minutes. We joined the latest Jun 2026 RTA median rents to every suburb's commute to map cost against convenience.

Hover a column heading for its definition. All times in minutes, door-to-door from each suburb's population-weighted centre (tap 📍 to see it). The small figure under the commute is walk + wait + ride. “Commute” arrives by 9am; “Evening” leaves the city at 6pm. “vs car” is minutes slower than driving in traffic (green = within 10). “Routes” and “Peak/hr” are the distinct services and peak departures per hour within an 800m walk. Tap a column heading to sort.

How this was calculated
Every number here is reproducible. This is exactly how each one was produced, and where it can be off.
Worked example: Enoggera
We start at Enoggera's population-weighted centre (-27.42272, 152.98791). Google plans the fastest trip from there to Brisbane Central arriving by 9:00am: about 10 min walking to and from stops, 0 min waiting, and 19 min riding the train. Total door-to-door: 29 minutes. Driving the same trip in peak traffic plus parking is 33 min, so transit is 4 min faster.
- The suburbs. Every gazetted suburb (ABS Suburbs & Localities, 2021) whose centre is within 20km of Brisbane Central station: 205 in all.
- Where we measure from. Not the geometric middle of the suburb (which often lands in a park, barracks or industrial estate and makes transport look worse than it is), but the population-weighted centroid (WorldPop 2020, 1km): the centre weighted toward where people actually live, using the WorldPop 1km population grid. The exact point is published for every suburb via the 📍 link, so you can check it.
- The commute. Planned door-to-door from that point to Brisbane Central station, arriving by 9:00am on a Tuesday 18 August 2026, using Google Directions on the public TransLink timetable and taking the fastest option offered. Each figure splits into walk + wait + ride: the ride is in-vehicle time (this is the part that matches the trip you know), the walk is getting to and from stops, the wait is time at the stop. The evening figure is a 6:00pm trip home.
- The car. The same origin to the CBD by car in the morning peak, using Google's live-typical traffic (duration-in-traffic, not the free-flow time), plus a 8-minute allowance for finding a park and walking to the office, so the car is door-to-door too and the comparison is fair.
- Connectivity and frequency. The distinct routes you can catch, the weekday departures, and the peak departures per hour within an 800m walk of the origin, across bus, train and ferry, counted from the TransLink timetable.
- Checks. The dataset does not publish unless every value passes a plausibility gate (nothing slower than walking, no inner suburb over an hour), and the results are validated against real commuter times.
Where it can be off (honestly)
- It measures from the middle of where people live, so if you live next to the station your own commute will beat the number here; the ride time in the breakdown is the part to compare.
- It is one representative weekday, so times shift a little with the timetable, and a handful of suburbs still show a short bus ride to their nearest station because that is genuinely the fastest option from the population centre.
- Connectivity uses a straight-line 800m radius, so a stop across a river or rail line can look closer than it walks. Park & ride is not modelled yet.
- It is the network as timetabled today, not a forecast: it does not model Cross River Rail, future upgrades or fare changes.

Questions
What are the best Brisbane suburbs for public transport?
For connectivity (the most routes within a 10-minute walk) the best are Brisbane City, Spring Hill, Fortitude Valley, Petrie Terrace, Newstead, Bowen Hills. For the fastest trip into the city it's Bowen Hills, Fortitude Valley, Milton, Newmarket, South Brisbane. This ranks every suburb on measured data, not opinion.
Is it faster to drive or take public transport in Brisbane?
Once you count peak traffic and parking, closer than most people think. Public transport is within 10 minutes of driving in 152 of the 199 suburbs with a service, and actually beats the car in 72. The median suburb's public-transport commute is only 4 minutes slower than driving.
How is the commute time measured?
Door-to-door from each suburb's population-weighted centre to Brisbane Central station, arriving by 9:00am on a Tuesday 18 August 2026, via Google Directions on the public TransLink timetable. Every figure breaks down as walk + wait + ride, so the in-vehicle time matches what locals experience and the walk is shown as the honest access leg. The car figure uses peak traffic plus a 8-minute parking-and-walk allowance.
Why is my suburb's number higher than the train ride I know?
Because this is door-to-door, not the ride alone. We measure from the middle of where the suburb's population lives, so it includes the walk to the station and any wait. Check the walk + wait + ride breakdown: the ride should match your experience, and the walk is the extra. The origin point we measured from is published for every suburb.
