What is Sandgate?
Sandgate and Shorncliffe sit on the northern bay, about half an hour from the city at the end of the Shorncliffe line. It was a seaside resort town in the 1880s and a fair bit of that architecture is still standing along the foreshore.
Shorncliffe pier is the draw: rebuilt in 2016, long, and pointed almost due east, which makes it one of the better sunrise spots in Brisbane.
Why go, and what to see
Shorncliffe Pier
Long timber pier, popular with fishers, and the sunrise view back along it
Sandgate foreshore
Parkland, playgrounds and the walking path along the bay
Sandgate town centre
Cafes and antique shops in the old village strip
Curlew Park
Picnic ground on the water, and the migratory shorebirds it is named for
