The station and the bus interchange sit almost side by side. (The old Toombul Shoppingtown between them was demolished after the 2022 floods, which is why some older guides get this wrong.)

The 590 is the only route that links Toombul with the airport precinct. About every 20 minutes on weekdays, every 30 on weekends, and about a 10 minute ride, all part of the same 50c journey as your train. Note the first weekend 590 isn't until around 8am.

Getting to Toombul in the first place
Toombul is better connected than its quiet reputation suggests. As well as the Shorncliffe line, it's served by Caboolture-line trains and cross-city Cleveland and Beenleigh services, so from the city you'll usually have a train within 10 to 15 minutes, and the run from Central takes around 15. Weekend watch-out: trackwork occasionally replaces these trains with buses, which can blow the timing out. If you're travelling on a weekend, check the Shorncliffe line status first.
Coming the other way, from the airport into the city, just run it in reverse: free shuttle to DFO, 590 to Toombul, walk to the station, train home. Plan the on-network legs with the journey planner (it'll route the train and bus, but you'll add the free shuttle yourself, since no planner knows it exists).
Is this route right for you?
Be honest about what it involves: a train, a 153 metre walk, a bus and a shuttle, so three changes and a fair bit of hauling. If you have large or heavy bags, limited mobility, or you're travelling with older relatives or young kids, that is a lot of stops, standing and lifting, and the Airtrain's single step-free ride is genuinely worth the money. The loop runs Skygate to International (about 10 min) to Domestic (about 20 min from Skygate), then back. Coming the other way it's roughly 5 minutes Domestic to Skygate and 15 from International.

Brisbane Airport runs the free Skygate Loop as an official airport transfer bus, promoted for shoppers and the precinct's workers but open to anyone, with room on board for luggage. It's a genuine free service. The only reason it feels like a secret is that it isn't in any journey planner's data, so almost nobody thinks to string it together with a train and a 50c bus.
When to just pay for the Airtrain
The timing catch is simple: if your flight leaves before about 8am, or you land after 5pm, the free shuttle isn't running and this route falls apart, no exceptions.
