Gold Coast 500: getting to the race

Race-week changes, live · every October

Once a year Surfers Paradise becomes a street circuit, and the roads you'd normally use become the racetrack. The trick locals know: the tram glides straight through race week while the roads snarl. Here's the live picture as changes are announced, and the plan that beats the chequered-flag exodus.

The tram play

The G:link runs through race week while the streets below close — ride to the Surfers Paradise stops and you're minutes from the gates. Coming from Brisbane, it's the train to Helensvale then the tram south; check the live tram status before you set off, and the Gold Coast line status for the rail leg.

After the flag

The post-race surge hits the tram hard for about an hour — either move the moment the racing ends or stay for the concert and let it clear. Heading north, know your last train from Helensvale: last service home has the live answer, and the big event nights guide covers the general playbook.

GC500 questions

How do I get to the Gold Coast 500?+

The tram is the race's best friend: the street circuit closes roads around Surfers Paradise, but the G:link keeps running above the chaos — ride to the Surfers Paradise stops and walk to the gates. From Brisbane, take the train to Helensvale and change to the tram.

What roads and services change during race week?+

The circuit build changes bus routes around Surfers and Main Beach for a couple of weeks around the race, with the big closures on race weekend itself. TransLink announces the specifics in the lead-up — they appear in the live panel above automatically.

Should I drive to the GC500?+

No. The circuit closes the roads you'd want, parking is scarce paid chaos, and the exits jam. Park-and-ride at a tram or train station and ride in — it's what the event itself recommends.

How do I get back to Brisbane after the race?+

Tram north to Helensvale, then the train. Check the last connection before the evening concerts finish — our last service home tool has the live answer on the night.
